BEING READY—WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS
Prepare Early - Fire Adapted & Ready
Being Ready for wildfire starts with maintaining an adequate defensible space and by hardening your home.
Defensible space is the buffer zone you create between a building on your property and any wildland area surrounding it. This is done by removing dead trees, plants, grass, and weeds to help keep the fire away from your home.
Hardening your home involves using building materials that are ignition-resistant, meaning that they are less likely to catch fire or sustain burning when exposed to embers and small flames from wildfires.
Prepare yourself and your home for the possibility of having to evacuate. There are three main preparation actions that should be completed and familiar to all members of your household far in advance of a wildfire.
Teton Conservation District offers an excellent Wildfire Risk Reduction Program to help you learn more and take action.

Act Early! - EVACUATE!
By leaving early you give your family the best chance of surviving a wildfire. You also help firefighters by keeping roads clear of congestion. Remember to bring pets with you!
When to Leave?
- Leave early to avoid being caught in the fire, smoke or road congestion. Don't wait to be told by authorities to leave. IF YOU FEEL YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! If you are advised to leave, don't hesitate.
Where to Go?
- Head to your predetermined location or as directed by officials.
How to get there?
- Have several routes planned in case one route is blocked. Choose an escape route away from the fire. Stay informed on current road status, closures and hazards.
What to take?
- Take your emergency supply kit containing your family's & pet's medications & necessary items.
